Text a Toastie

This is an event the Christian Union (CU) at my college puts on. The CU is a small group of students committed to following and serving Christ on a college campus. We meet every week for bible study, prayer, and fellowship. There are often other smaller events throughout the week as well. One event is Text a Toastie, in which we open the doors for all students to ask any question they have about Christianity or God. The questions are text to us, along with a toastie order... hence Text a Toastie. For those who do not know, a toastie is essentially a British Panini. We then make their toastie and hand deliver it to their room with an answer to their question. Questions range from:
If God was a football fan what team would he vote for?
and
Is God like me and you?
TO
How can one justify God when children in third world countries die every day?
and
Why is being gay bad?
This event represents the academic nature of Oxford because people seriously question faith and either want to learn more about Christianity or debate as to the meanings of certain topics. Some people, honestly, just want a free toastie. The event provides a safe place for students to seek answers. By no means does our group possess all of the answers; however, we do have personal experience and knowledge that can help to bring light into a student's darkness. Our words only go so far but our actions are the truly important message we want students to receive. We want them to know we are open to questions, open to them, willing to share, willing to serve, and accepting of differences. I am grateful for the opportunity to minister in this way and to learn more about evangelism in Oxford. I am impressed by the knowledge students possess and their depth of biblical study. Even the students who do not believe challenged me with the amount of information they knew about the Bible or certain doctrine. This opportunity was eye opening, and I am eager to participate in more text a toastie nights!
May you never fear to ask questions, to seek answers, knowing that a desire to learn reveals curiosity, which exposes an interest. Even if a concrete answer is not reached, God possesses the answer and the love to satisfy your interest.
All my love,
Gennavieve

Hampton Court Palace

Today, I toured Hampton Court Palace, an official historic, royal palace. Following are some of the sights I saw, history I learned, and favorites I enjoyed. The guard chamber of King William III. The magnificent display of 2,871 items of armor and weapons displayed a message that William was a great soldier and peacemaker. William's Presence chamber. Only high-ranking individuals were permitted into this room. William would be distinguished by sitting on a Chair of Estate. Those who entered his presence were required to remove their hats and make three low bows to the King, or even his empty chair. I'm grateful to serve an accessible King, who is with me wherever I go. William's eating room. He was expected to dine here on occasions "in front of persons of good fashion and good appearance," in order to display the sumptuousness of his food and to reassure everyone he was in good health. He was served by three servants on bended knee. William's P...

Finals Ahead

With final exams around the corner I have completed quite an assortment of exciting adventures, all in preparation for studying I promise. From body surfing in the mighty waves of the Indian ocean, to zip lining above the beautiful canopies of South Africa, to sliding down the tarp on AE's grassy hill I feel so blessed to be able to experience wild and carefree fun. I went to Durban on Saturday and the weather was perfect for a swim. The waves were absolutely gigantic and completely powerful! There were several times that my heart would quicken because I got knocked around a little out of my comfort zone. Sunday, we went on a zip lining tour, which was very nice. Having zip lined before I was not nervous and so went first within our group. On a few of the lines, the guides would goof around and flail their arms or reach for trees and bounce off of the branches. However, when I expressed a desire to try to mirror them one of the men said, "Monkey see, monkey do. Monkey t...

Cue Christmas music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t_forzHXzE -No, seriously! Click on this link and listen to this as you read my words, go on! I am dreaming about Christmas with my loved ones. I'l...
