Walk in the Light

This is the name of the organization where I am located for service sites in the town of Haniville.I have grown to love and appreciate the joy filled individuals and learning opportunities here. When choosing preferences for our areas of service I put, "Place me wherever," and I was incredibly rewarded by God because He provided me with an incredible team that has filled my heart with laughter and many great memories. I would like to take the time to offer a brief bio of each member.

CASEY
A man of God who embraces life with a "Go for it" attitude. He is easygoing and consistent. You can always rely on him to be laid back and up for adventure. He adds a depth to our group because he offers a very different perspective from others. Casey is like a monkey, always climbing trees and exploring. He embraces Joshua 1:9, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go," demonstrating a faith in God that is inspiring.

Allex
Beach babe Allex! Allex is a quirky beach girl from SoCal with great taste in music, travel and food. She is constantly surprising me with the unique things that she is involved in, such as herbalife and worldwide pen pals. She carries a peaceful presence with a caring heart. In tune with her emotions and able to be determine when to be serious in our site, Allex is adaptable in many situations. She invests in others and is like Ruth, standing by the side of others saying, "Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay." (1:16)

Sarah
Smile and sunshine! Sarah has a smile that literally brightens any room. She knows how to be silly, embracing a girly tomboyishness. She also possesses a calm presence who has a huge heart, which is witnessed as she loves on the little children in the creche. Mark 18:10 says, "See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven."

Celina
Also my one of my chalet mates, Celina has been like a plant, constantly growing and challenging herself. I have witnessed Celina be stretched and come out stronger. She is very intuitive and aware of those around her. She is very good at attempting to include everyone and she is a very hard worker, willing to get dirty and sweat. Celina is extremely competitive and independent. She expresses an admirable determination and reminds me of what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:24, "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize."

Lexi
Happiness and comedy. Freckled and girly, Lexi works at Disneyland and adds a sense of humor that most of us can relate to. She is the most fun to tease and trick. She is fairly talkative and at times when our group is tired and conversation fails to flow, the sound of Lexi's voice talking away is oddly comforting to me. Lexi serves as a reminder that every individual has a part to play in the kingdom, "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10

Grace
My wonderful roommate, who adds so much laughter at the most random moments of the day. She is a great listener and strongly grounded in the word of God. With her your story is safe and valuable. She is attuned to detail and appreciates some of the small things in life. She guards her heart but has a powerful story. She often expresses a wisdom that mirrors that of heaven, which "Is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full or mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere." (James 3:17)

Jacob
Most random individual that I have had the pleasure to get to know. Our team has a quotation list of our silly sayings and half of them are from Jacob. He never fails to begin a story with a hilarious hook such as, "One time I went down this dark alley," or "My grandpa goes to jail every Tuesday..." He is a hilarious guy with a playful spirit. I enjoy watching his interactions with the community because he always smiles with a child-like fascination and wonder. He is very willing and passionate, I think of Isaiah's response to God, "Here I am Lord, send me." (6:8)

May God grant you friends who can walk alongside you, loving you enough to challenge you and supporting you with prayer and lots of laughter.
All my love,
Gennavieve

Hampton Court Palace

Today, I toured Hampton Court Palace, an official historic, royal palace. Following are some of the sights I saw, history I learned, and favorites I enjoyed. The guard chamber of King William III. The magnificent display of 2,871 items of armor and weapons displayed a message that William was a great soldier and peacemaker. William's Presence chamber. Only high-ranking individuals were permitted into this room. William would be distinguished by sitting on a Chair of Estate. Those who entered his presence were required to remove their hats and make three low bows to the King, or even his empty chair. I'm grateful to serve an accessible King, who is with me wherever I go. William's eating room. He was expected to dine here on occasions "in front of persons of good fashion and good appearance," in order to display the sumptuousness of his food and to reassure everyone he was in good health. He was served by three servants on bended knee. William's P

Oopsy Daisy

Today I learned a cultural lesson through my daisy chain making. I was just being typical Gennavieve, frolicking in the fields between the rose geranium and picking daisies. I decided to make a chain and, before long, I had quickly assembled a round daisy necklace. I held it for a bit and then one of the workers, Mikeal, came up to our group and I decided to give it to him, so I put the flower garland around his head and it plopped on his neck. Little did I know that my actions meant much more than I had intended. Mikeal's eyes lit up and he screamed in Zulu to his coworkers, proudly showing off his chain. I giggled at first and then after the eruption of laughter from the workers, I realized that I had done something unusual. I swiftly found Pendele, one of the women who I've grown to trust and love who also translates for us, and asked her to explain why the men had been laughing. She began to laugh herself when I told her and after she regained composure she sai

JCR Welcoming Dinner

As part of New College, I was cordially invited to a welcoming dinner in the JCR Private Dining Room at St. Catherine's College. This invitation is considered an incredible honor and, after talking to the presidents, many students never receive the privilege of a formal dining experience in a college hall. The evening called for black tie attire, which meant tuxes for the guys and formal dresses for the girls. Luckily, I packed my sister's pink cotton candy gown. The evening began in a welcoming chamber. We entered and, having been handed a glass of sherry, began making small conversation. After a social bit, we were lead to the dining hall, where we were seated at a table purposely designed higher than the other tables in the hall, symbolizing its importance. The plates had individual name cards, designating seats. I sat to the left of the special, middle head-chair which seated, Deepak Mukhi, our program director. I took one glance at my place setting, noting the multi
